Saturday afternoon brought the curtain down on a fine year for GAS with a highly impressive record of 20 wins from 26 games, including 108 goals scored! Despite struggling to pull together the numbers for the game, all involved were keen to ensure the year ended on a high and to savour the evenings festivities with a win!

It was another extremely hot afternoon but GAS started on the front foot and could have been a number of goals up in the first 10 minutes but for some better finishing and surprisingly against the run of play their opponents for the day took an early lead as their prolific forward burst through the middle and sliding the ball into the bottom corner past goalkeeper for the day Gerd. The boys in gold were shell-shocked, but, knowing that they were controlling the game heads did not go down and it was a question of when, and not if, they would get the breakthrough. However, it was the dangerman from Drunken Leprechaun, who was anything but a drunken leprechaun, who got the next goal. Similar to his first, using his pace to break through and make it 2-0. It was a massive setback for GAS who had continued to create the better chances but they hit back immediately as the confused Frenchman Yan, took a throw-in in his stride and waltzed through the defence before bending one in the bottom corner, game on!

GAS tails were up now after this goal but there was always a sense of danger from the forward line of their opponents on the break and it was they who extended their lead to make it 3-1 in a killer blow to GAS who were just looking like getting back into the game. With half time fast approaching, and a tough half time team talk on the way, GAS were awarded a free-kick 25 yards out to the left of the box. Up stepped top scorer Schaufler and curled the ball beautifully inside the post as the opposition keeper could only watch it sail in. 3-2, the last kick of the half.

GAS began the second half on the front foot, as they had done the first, pushing back their opponents and controlling the game. They were given an opportunity to draw level as Yan was played in down the side and performed his best ‘leaping salmon’ impression to win a penalty which Dominik duly slammed into the corner to level the match. Not long after, GAS took the lead as Yan got one of his telescopic long legs on to a clearance from the Drunken goalkeeper and stunned their opponents to put GAS into the lead, a quite stunning finish from the forward from all of 0.5 yards! A perfect example of the benefits of geggen-pressing, Jurgen would be proud.

The Drunken Leprechauns seem stunned to be behind after having such a commanding lead in the first half and things got worse for them as a lovely lofted ball over the top of their backline to send winger John clean through to nick in past their onrushing goalkeeper and slam the ball home (some say they saw a no look finish) and put clear daylight between the teams at 5-3. What a turnaround.

The final 15 minutes were somewhat of a backs to the wall job at times and despite getting one goal to make it 5-4 some fine defending from Kalle, Diego and Gerd kept the scores to 5-4 GAS and ensured another hard fought victory, just as sweet as the earlier demolitions before this.

Special mention to Gerd for covering in goal and making some fine saves in the process!
