This weekend the tournament formerly known as the “Hoffenheim Supporters Tournament” at the Swiss School in Min Buri took place once again. To defend last year’s title, the German All Stars Vets team showed up with an extraordinarily strong squad, among that our two youngsters Benni and Julian, Markus in goal and Philip who had his premiere as coach doing a great job.
Best football weather awaited us and our group was for sure not an easy one, our well known opponents from Pattaya included. First game we met the team from the German embassy, among those “our” player Dirk Grossmann. Maybe he made the wrong choice to join them instead of us, because we hammered them clearly 4:0.
A good start, but the following teams were another class and the first one of them was Galaxy Pattaya. Don’t know if this should be called a football match or better a battle….fact is, that those guys were maybe a bit over-motivated, which Michael, today playing on the pitch instead of being the goaly, had to feel by himself. A bone-crunching foul is really not necessary in a charity tournament like this. After three or four more rough fouls the tempers got higher and the referee started to get a bit sweaty, as he tried to run in between raging and shouting players one or two heads taller than him…
Fortunately every game is over once and the final result was 1:1. More to come soon. Last game of the group stage was against a Thai team, name unknown, and our last chance to qualify to the top group. We drew goalless, but that was enough for a second place in our group, behind Pattaya.
The semi-final against Lufthansa was more difficult than we thought and lack of concentration punished us: After only a few minutes we had already two goals against us. But the German All Stars are well-known for (almost) never giving up and with a brave fight we could manage to score, too: First Benni, then Faxe , who should be awarded with the “goal-of-the-year-trophy” for his goal made with the heel and finally Julian with the last and deciding goal .
So came the final, guess against who, of course, it had to be Pattaya once again. The moods were a bit calmer this time, but it did not stop the eastern seaborders to commit a few more harsh fouls. What is the punishment for taking down a ball inside the own box with the hands when you are not a goalkeeper? I always thought it is a clear penalty and maybe an additional yellow card. Wrong am I.
The ref stood directly next to it and did NOT see anything. As well as the probably most deserved penalty ever. As well as….and…and others. I think we can admit that the Pattaya team was extraordinarily strong, fast in running, strong with shooting. But of course a foul is a foul and handball should be punished. That was not the case and we lost a bit unfortunate 1:2. Nevertheless we were second of the tournament, got our silverware and emptied the beer booth as usual. And next year we have the chance to win back the title!
