The consistency of the Vets team is really amazing: One month we have to cancel a tournament because of a lack of players, the other month we barely get enough players for being qualified as a team and then there are these tournaments like the latest one.
About 14 players confirmed and we even thought about starting with two teams…but the previous day there were then already two cancellations. Therefore two other players confirmed and friends of friends….chaos as usual. But no reason to complain, we were eventually able to start with 13 players, not enough though for a second team. Nevertheless, an exquisite team with one of the best squads and some of our finest players.
Piece of cake…or not?
First game 0:3. Boom. Reality bites.
Second game 0:1. Bang. Life’s a bitch.
Third game 0:1. Bamm. What the hell…?
At least the last group game was successful and it seemed that we finally found our way. 3:1 with goals from Yilmaz, Phillip and Faxe, saved us the second place from last. So we went into the next round with our rows thinning. All of a sudden the 13 players didn’t seem to be too many now. First game against another Japanese team looked quite promising; we dominated, had lots of chances, Phillip made a goal. The Japanese as well, so we had to go into the penalty shoot-out and just had no luck, lost 1:2.
Last game for the 7th place was again against a Japanese team and with our last strengths we managed to win 2:1. Ending up as fourth from the last was for sure not expected by anyone at the beginning of the tournament. But as so often, we lost the day in the first games. Even a great squad is not always a guarantee for winning silverware.
Nevertheless we had big fun, eating and drinking like winners once again. Thanks for Ilona for showing up and supporting us with funny comments and others…no offence, Ilona, always a pleasure with you! What is left to say is, that it would be nice for the next tournaments to start up with a strong squad again (quality AND quantity!) and maybe next time we could manage NOT to lose the first and important games again.
